Viewfinder: Eye Speak for the Trees is an interactive, time-based, site specific installation. At the onset of this project, I was thinking about the origins of photography and the optical phenomena of the camera obscura. As I observed and interacted with the landscape of Martell Forest, I began responding more to the beauty of transitory light throughout the space rather than harnessing light into a darkened chamber. My focus turned towards freeing the environment’s quality of light and interpretation of the camera obscura.
Nestled in a grid of tress, this cubic structure is built from man-made fragments of its surroundings. Ephemeral reflections contained inside the box react to changes in the environment, light, and weather, inviting viewers to focus their attention on a specific fragment of time and space. The concealed image can only exist through engagement with the apertures or by one holding on to the memory of a fleeting image. Through continuous observation and response to the environment, this installation morphed into an exploration of the boundaries between interior and exterior space, natural and highly constructed, and relationships between light, memory, perception, and reflection.
